Yep, anything outputting voltage will give you a Hz reading. If the unit has a stepper motor, there should be no adjustment available for speed. The stepper will take care of that. Not sure what screw is being adjusted...?

12v to #4 wire, idle control switch off, probes in #’s 11&22 I got readings starting at 0.480 going up and down but gradually going down settling around 0.207HZ

same as above but wires 2&6, started around 0.189hz and settling around 0.072hz

I’ve never measured Hz so I’m sorry if I’m messing it up.

The meter reading is 0.207 kHz or 207 Hz.
IMHO that meter is not capabale of reading the distorted waveform of a generator.
Connect it to utility company feed and verify that it reads 60 Hz or 0.060 kHz.

Murphy is correct. Those readings are all over and not accurate. Also, that screw is a limit stop and by adjusting it, you're forcing the stepper motor in a direction it doesn't want to go...

Is the stepper motor doing any of the work?

There's a link to 2 nice meters in my signature in my Amazon store. I personally use the Greenlee DM820A every day and have had several of them over the past 10 years and REALLY love that meter!

Good morning. So I checked the Hz on my house outlet and got everything from 7.25 to 0.060. I would agree the meter ( or operator ) can’t measure Hz. What part regulates Hz and how difficult is it to change? If it’s not already painfully obvious I have exceeded my electrical diagnostics ability BY FAR 🤣

Hz is directly proportional to engine RPM. 3600 RPM is 60 Hz.

Murphy if the Hz are off though. What would be the failed part? Rpm’ s are most certainly 3000+ I was just wondering if there was a part that regulated Hz and it was $100 or less I would just replace it instead of wasting you gentlemen’s time was all

The engine controller monitors the RPM and adjusts the throttle to maintain 3600 RPM. If the load on the alternator increases the engine will slow down. The controller will recognize the slow down and open the throttle to allow more fuel flow to bring it back to 3600 RPM. 60 Hz is maintained when the engine is at 3600 RPM.

I think at this point your meter is going to hold us back from much further testing. If you can't trust the meter, we can't trust the results and may be chasing something that really isn't there... If Hz is moving around engine RPM will be moving around as well. Something as small as 2Hz of movement will be very audible in the engine sound.
