Hi,
I’m looking for some help on a Guardian 12K
Model 0044562
S# 3862803
LP fuel
It starts right up, but shuts down around about 8 seconds.
I noticed that if the regulator indicator light comes on, it will continue to run and make power.
If the regulator indicator light does not come on, it will not make power, and usually shuts down. Occasionally it will continue to run without making power.
I checked and cleaned the brushes, went over all the cables and connections.
I’m not sure what the voltages should be at the regulator. I can easily test them when it continues to run, but my digital meter is too slow to check startup voltages.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Chris

Check the resistance on the 0 and 4 wires at the AVR with them removed. Sounds like dirty slip rings to me!

I checked resistance between wires 0 & 4,
Have 18 1/2 ohms,
I also cleaned the area where the brushes make contact. I used scotch bright and looked at them with a mirror.
What should the resistance be?
What should I check next?
Is there anyway to check the regulator?
What powers the regulator on, and does the regulator excite the generator?
Thanks
Chris

The 4 wire gets excitation voltage initially from the PCB. You can check for DC voltage when cranking and see if you get voltage on the 4 wire. You could also try to manually excite the 4 wire with 12V from the battery, but do not leave the 12V jumper from the battery connected once the unit starts. If the AVR stays lit and makes power, excitation from the board is bad. You can bypass it with a field boost kit seen here: https://shop.gentekpower.com/products/g ... -upfit-kit

So I checked dc voltage when cranking,
Almost ever time the voltage is about 5 to 6 vdc and goes to zero, regulator light doesn’t come on and no ac output voltage. Every once in awhile about 13 vdc is there, regulator light is on and making power.
When I jump 12v from the battery to wire 4, the regulator light comes on and making power. But when I remove the wire the regulator light goes off and it doesn’t make power.
Are there new pcb boards available for this yet?

When you jump 12V to the 4 wire, is that with it connected to the AVR still, or removed? If it's still connected, when you jump 12V to the 4 wire, the AVR should stay lit when you remove the jumper and continue to run!

Everything is connected as it should be, I added a wire to wire #4 to get 12v from the battery. It will continue to run and make power when the AVR light is on and the jumper is connected. When then 12v jumper is removed it stops make power.

Then you have another problem. The jumper should ONLY be connected for a second or two during cranking and then it should take off on its own. My thought would be that the DPE breaker is bad, AVR is bad, or you're not getting power on the 2 and 6 wires when the unit is running.

What are you referring to as the DPE breaker?
What should the voltage be on wire 2 & 6, to each other? 0, or ground?
Does the voltage go away on wire 4 after it starts?
thanks
