Hey Charlie,

If you want to start a new topic in the Generac Air Cooled section, just copy/paste the body of this message to the new topic.

If the rotor shows open, you'll need to find out why and do some tearing down to get to the slip rings and find out why.

Hello, I have an 8kW Generac air-cooled standby generator, installed in the Central New Jersey area, powered by natural gas. It's ran okay but lately, in the last month, it experienced hard starting problems. The last time, starting two weeks ago, it returned an Over cranking message and did not start. I replaced the spark plug with a brand new one. The old filter had just been replaced as well as the oil. Everything, oil level, oil filter, air filter, checked okay. I switched the unit to manual and after five tries, the engine started so I let it run for the ten minute requirement. Last week, it happened again. I had to switch to manual and after six tries, it started. I allowed it to run for the ten minute requirement.

If anyone had experienced this problem, please let me know what to check next. Thank you!

You're probably experiencing issues with valves that have not been adjusted. Have you, or has anyone else adjusted the valves?

Been using the Smm modules. I know they are controlled by the frequency that is across the line. I would like to start using the modules for the small gasoline portable generator installs. I don’t see a reason that the modules would have to be matched up with any exact equipment. The controllers are independent units. Will I have any problems with this type of install. Thanks for this site . Have Electrical co. For 30 yr. just became a generac dealer

That would seem kinda of a waste... For portables a customer has to interact with breakers anyways, so they'd be better off just turning off the offending breakers!

The idea with the modules is to manage the loads without the customer having to manually turn breakers off. Also not being able to overload the generator is a code requirement. Essential circuit installation or management modules can be used. I guess I will set up a project wit my gasoline generator and test the module out more thoroughly.. Can anyone tell me what they have been using to check frequency with. I find the function on some meters but not all. Also checking dc amperage inductively with a probe is sometimes a function hard to find on some vom meters

There is plenty of business in installing portable set ups. I think I will start offering manual transfer switch with a essential circuit panel. Many customers don’t want to invest in a whole house unit. Good idea.

You'll need a good quality digital meter, like a Fluke 117 or something similar to accurately measure frequency (Hz). Stay AWAY from Klein meters and other cheapo meters! They don't play nice with gens...

Something like this Fluke 117 is what you want: https://amzn.to/3cFWPZi
